Canadian Bank Note Reader

Operating Instructions:

Hold the Bank Note Reader in the palm of your hand or place it on a flat surface with the opening for the bank note on top. Insert the short-edge of a Canadian bank note under the overhang ensuring the edges are flat against the edge guides. Slide the bank note into the slot. When the bank note has been fully inserted, the Bank Note Reader will announce the denomination and turn itself off.

Operating Controls:

  • On the front left edge, there is a switch to select the output type to be one of either voice, vibration or tone.
  • On the front right edge, there is a three level volume switch.
  • The announcement language can be changed between English and French by reversing the battery.
  • A stereo jack for headphones is located on the right side.
  • Provision for a tether strap is recessed in the centre of the front edge.

Announcements:

The following spoken phrases are announced:
  • five, ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred, cannot read or replace battery.
cannot read - may occur because:
    1. the note is not a Canadian bank note,
    2. the note can only be read at one end on some new series bank notes,
    3. the note is misaligned,
    4. the note is not completely inserted,
    5. the note is in poor condition.
If the problem persists for many different bank notes and cannot be explained as mentioned, try replacing the battery. If this does not correct the problem then contact your local distributing agency for further assistance.
  • replace battery - this is a warning that the battery is low. The unit will continue to work reliably for approximately 100 more reads. Obtain a new nine-volt alkaline battery soon.
When tone or vibration is selected instead of voice, the denominations are indicated by the following codes.
  • 1 short beep or vibration indicates $5
  • 2 short beeps or vibrations indicates $10
  • 3 short beeps or vibrations indicates $20
  • 4 short beeps or vibrations indicates $50
  • 1 short beep or vibration followed by a long beep or vibration indicates $100
  • 2 long beeps or vibrations indicates that the bank note cannot be read.
If the battery is weak, each output message will be preceded with a long beep or vibration, whichever is selected.
The Bank Note Reader is intended to assist you in denominating Canadian bank notes. It will not guarantee a note tested is genuine.
